“Such a manual and repetitive process really dents productivity,” says Dr Ramiz Nathani, research chemist and entrepreneur.

“I was really struggling to find a single method that was quick and efficient to keep track of the latest research,” says Dr Hazel Jackson, an expert in population genetics for wildlife conservation, and Science Director of Animal Free Research UK, a charity based in Hitchin, UK.īrowsing scientific literature was not as easy as it was for other types of content. And, unlike other types of content, very few research papers are read on mobile devices. There is no simple way to browse multiple journals, and the chance of discovering something unexpected is low. But these cover a huge range of types of content and providers, and are not easily honed for research purposes.Īll in all, scientists can spend hours each week on inefficient ways of monitoring the literature. News aggregating apps, such as Feedly, are more mobile friendly and allow for browsing. As such, they take time to set up, which can also be fiddly on a phone. Tools such as Mendeley Suggest and Readcube try to solve this problem by recommending papers based on users' reading or citation history. Dr Arjun Krishnan, a computational biologist at Michigan State University in East Lansing, describes how he tried “cobbling together” the functionality of different online tools, but still did not feel on top of the literature. But, with more than 7,000 papers published every day in around 30,000 peer-reviewed journals, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of emerging information.Ĭommon methods researchers use include setting up RSS feeds, methodically visiting journal websites or painstakingly reading emailed tables of contents - typically on a desktop computer. It is crucial to determining where the knowledge gaps are and to avoid reinventing the wheel. Staying up to date with the literature is perhaps one of the most important tasks throughout a researcher’s career.
